FANCY COLORS: Silver, Green, Gold, Platinum
Credit card colors can be summed up in one word: prestige.
The first real status card was the American Express Gold
Card. Card colors play to our need for recognition and
prestige. A gold card says "you've made it." Trouble is,
there are so many different cards now, nobody can tell if
you've made it or not. If you really want to show them
you've made it; pay cash!
Some of the Travel and Expense (T&E) cards, as well as most
■prestige■ cards offer improved service with the higher
levels of card membership. But, in the long run, they're
probably not worth the added expense. In the 1990's,
merchants are "color blind" where credit cards are
concerned.
Consider the following pitch that appeared on a credit card
issuer's sales flyer:
"Rich platinum look -- makes your Visa
card and MasterCard powerful!"
This company's annual interest percentage
rate -- 19.75 percent!
